Solana has been declared the first recipient of CoinMarketCap’s CMC “Cryptocurrency of the Year” award, as per a March 6 announcement shared with CryptoSlate.
This CMC accolade is intended to acknowledge superior achievements in the cryptocurrency arena, spread across eight different categories, paying tribute to distinguished projects and personalities. The selection for the award followed an intensive ten-day period of scrutiny that combined public voting, analytical data assessment, and expert opinions.
The award aims to honor a blockchain network’s revolutionary innovation and lasting influence on the sector, with nominees such as Ripple, Chainlink, Ethereum, and Toncoin.
Despite the competition, Solana stood out for its ability to navigate through various adversities, which included network disruptions and prior links with the now-disgraced founder of the collapsed exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried.
Moreover, Solana has forged significant alliances with mainstream financial ventures including Visa and has seen substantial uptake over the previous year.
These strides have led the investment firm VanEck to forecast that by the year’s end, SOL will ascend as one of the top three blockchain networks, as measured by market capitalization, total value locked (TVL), and the number of active users.

Most Creative NFT and Gaming Initiative: Pudgy Penguins was recognized as the NFT venture showing the highest level of originality in the NFT and gaming sphere.
Trailblazer in DeFi Innovation: Uniswap was honored for its revolutionary impact on the DeFi landscape. The decentralized exchange recently launched a new governance initiative that reallocates protocol fees to UNI token bearers to encourage active participation in its ecosystem.
Crypto Visionary of the Year: This award saw an exceptional tie with Vitalik Buterin, Changpeng Zhao, Julia Leung, Brian Armstrong, and Ryan Selkis all being jointly acknowledged for their influential work in the crypto field.
